| During the cold winter, a whimsical story can warm the heart a bit and add a touch of compassion to our lives. The Bangkok Post recently published a photo-op entitled Classical Piano Soothes Elephants in Kanchanaburi. Elephants World is a self-supporting environmental conservation organization that cares for domestic elephants near Kanchanaburi, Thailand. Kanchanaburi is the general area made famous by the film “The Bridge Over the River Kwai” and is well-known to the author from adventures north of there with Colonel Chang of the Thai Communist Suppression Organization in the old days. The Elephants World organization cares for over thirty elephants and offers eco-travelers elephant experiences ranging from one day up to four weeks. British volunteer, Paul Barton, is shown here as he unloads his piano before he plays for sick, abused, retired and rescued elephants in the Elephants World sanctuary on the Thai/Myanmar border. He has been performing for the elephants for the past ten years.
Paul’s daughter Emily, aged 4, will join him to play several songs.
Nothing like a snack of cucumbers while you enjoy a good concert. In fact, cucumbers have become a favorite food of elephants.
Emily joins her father though she is not quite tall enough to see the reaction of her audience.
Elephants cannot clap, but as the one in the rear demonstrates, they can trumpet to express their feelings.
The bond between elephants and music is well established. An example can be seen in the video accessed below with Paul Barton playing Bach for a blind elephant.
