Injiri, meaning “real India”. It is a historic word for “real Madras checkered textiles” that were exported to west Africa in the 18th century.
The design sensibility is driven by traditional Indian textile techniques. The products speaks of the several hands that it has passed through. The design reflects the process of weaving, hand-stitching, hand-finishing. Each injiri product passes through the hands of several karigars (craftspeople) including spinners, rangrez (dyers), bunkars (weavers), darazis (tailors), and dastakars.
